Delivery of the IM8 dredging barge

Dredging operations require robust, versatile equipment adapted to the realities of the field. It is with this in mind that Navanex designed the IM8 dredging barge, a 24m long by 11m wide work platform developed to support the maritime and port operations of CTMA Dragage.

Designed as a true work tool, the IM8 was conceived to accommodate a hydraulic excavator for dredging operations while also offering significant transport capacity for the materials, equipment, and supplies required for these operations. This versatility allows it to meet a variety of needs on marine worksites while maximizing the efficiency of operations.
Beyond its operational capacity, the barge also acts as a floating operations center. It incorporates a wheelhouse for supervising activities and a mechanical room for storing essential parts, tools, and equipment. This configuration facilitates resupply and daily support for operations, thereby improving the autonomy of teams in the field.

A key aspect of the project was adapting the design to Techn’Îles’ manufacturing capabilities. By integrating the realities of the shipyard from the earliest stages of development, Navanex designed a robust and efficient structure that maximizes manufacturing productivity while minimizing assembly complexity. This production-oriented design approach optimized construction methods, simplified assembly sequences, and facilitated a smooth project execution. The result is a high-performance barge, designed to meet both CTMA Dragage’s operational needs and to be efficiently manufactured by the shipyard.
This project perfectly illustrates Navanex’s philosophy: to design marine equipment that meets real needs, by combining technical expertise, understanding of operations and a practical approach to manufacturing.

FAQ

Why is dredging important in small seaports?
Dredging plays a vital role in maintaining maritime infrastructure. Over time, sediments transported by currents, tides, and rivers accumulate in channels and port basins, gradually reducing the available depth.
In small ports, dredging allows, among other things:
• To maintain the depths required for navigation.
• To preserve safe access to the docks and port facilities.
• To reduce the risk of ships running aground.
• To ensure the continuity of fishing, transport and maritime service activities.
• To extend the lifespan of port infrastructure.

Without periodic maintenance, sediment accumulation can limit operations and cause significant constraints for port users.

Why is dredging essential in the Magdalen Islands?
The ports of the Magdalen Islands are constantly exposed to the effects of waves, currents, and natural sediment transport. This accumulation of sand in channels and basins can rapidly reduce available depths. Dredging therefore ensures continued access to wharves, ferries, fishing vessels, and service craft throughout the maritime season.
Unlike many sheltered ports on the mainland, the ports of the Magdalen Islands are subject to recurring silting caused by the archipelago’s dynamic coastal environment. Periodic interventions are necessary to maintain navigational depths and ensure the continuity of local economic activities.
