A New <15-GT Tugboat Designed by Navanex Takes Shape in Rivière-au-Renard

A New <15-GT Tugboat Designed by Navanex Takes Shape in Rivière-au-Renard

Navanex develops a custom model for Les Entreprises PEC Inc. in collaboration with Chantier Naval Forillon.

A brand-new service tugboat under 15 gross tons is currently under construction in Rivière-au-Renard, based on a custom design and production engineering by Navanex. Commissioned by Les Entreprises PEC Inc., the vessel meets highly specific needs: delivering a compact, powerful, and high-performance tug for port operations in challenging environments.

Key vessel specifications:

  • Length: 11.95 m (39’)
  • Beam: 4.45 m (14.5’)
  • Depth: 1.88 m (6’)
  • Engine power: 750 HP
  • Gross tonnage: <15 GT

A challenge of precision and speed

Launched in January 2025, the project progressed rapidly, with the design phase completed in just a few weeks. Since then, Chantier Naval Forillon has begun construction, working from detailed plans and a digital model perfectly tailored to the realities of shipbuilding.

A showcase of Navanex’s integrated approach, combining:

  • Custom production engineering
  • Accurate weight specifications
  • Validated plans ensuring smooth yard execution
  • Compliance with tight delivery schedules

A multidisciplinary team behind the success

This achievement is the result of a strong, collaborative team effort:

  • Hubert Simard – Project Management
  • Aaron Clark – Naval Architect, Weight and Stability
  • Christophe Egger – Design Technician, 3D Modeling
  • Charles Vézina – Production Engineering

Working closely with Jean-Nil P. Morissette and Olivier Blais Brousseau from Chantier Naval Forillon allowed for a seamless realization of the client’s vision with both rigor and efficiency.

A tugboat designed for Québec’s smaller ports

This new tugboat is specifically tailored for towing operations in smaller ports, where maneuverability, compactness, and power are essential. It embodies Navanex’s commitment to local innovation while meeting the highest standards of the maritime industry.

A flagship project for 2025

Delivery is scheduled for fall 2025, with a ceremony planned to mark the start of construction and the vessel’s launch at FOX (Rivière-au-Renard), in the presence of the client and the shipyard team.
